Final Studio Work

To the Students of Arch 401C – Winter Quarter 2017

Congratulations on successfully completing Arch 401C architecture design studio and delivering a creative vision for a culturally-rich Innovation Hub in the Central Area of Seattle. It was your assignment to design a project that explored ideas and applications to place-making of a hub for human service offices, a technology jobs development center, entrepreneurial startup space, makers space fabrication lab (fab-lab) and an affordable housing complex.

You all met the challenge to produce designs for a multi-faceted project and to provide a vision of a potential project to a virtual client. I applaud your successful team collaboration on the research of spatial, sociocultural and regulatory context of the Central Area to inform the planning and design of your individual projects.Your presentation materials have fulfilled the requirements and, in many cases, exceeded expectations. You should be as proud of your work as I am.

The record of your weekly notes and your final videos help to tell the story of this project to our client and stakeholders.

One objective of this studio was for you to reflect on your four years of architectural education and to utilize this studio project to “tell a story”. The story of you, your relationship to your education and the story of how the collaborative approach, employed on the project, will hopefully be carried with you throughout your future years.

Respectfully,

Donald I King FAIA – Visiting Professor of Archiecture
